Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#1)

My money is on a very well known celebrity/public figure being drafted in.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#2)

don't be so sure on that, watch this space

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#3)

Many assumed Tamsin Dunwoody was a shoo-in. Does lack of AWS indicate dynasty route not favoured?

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#4)

By-election date is May 22nd.

All trains and tracks lead to Crewe.

All aboard!

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#5)

Why has all this happened before the funeral of Gwyneth has even taken place?

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#6)

"Why has all this happened before the funeral of Gwyneth has even taken place? "

1. To show the lack of  respect for the deceased from Labour HO.
2. Panic.
3. To stop Livingstone applying.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#7)

From the guardian website:  "The decision to call the by-election now is in accordance with the family's wishes to see, as soon as possible, a new member of parliament elected to stand up for the people of Crewe and Nantwich."
The Dunwoody family said: "We fully support the decision to begin the process of electing a new MP for Crewe and Nantwich. Our mother proudly represented this constituency for 34 years and would not want to see local people go without an MP."

You might want to take back your comment about the lack of respect to gwyneth.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#16)

Well it is lack of respect - plain and simple !!!!
As Gwyneths daughter is very keen to fill her late mothers shoes, it is highly unlikely she is going to be critical.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#8)

According to a source (post dated 27 April 2008 00:23) on the Crewe Blog, Steve Conquest is the local favourite. He's a councillor for the Maw Green ward, a former Manchester city councillor and the candidate for Tatton in 2001.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#9)

Without wishing to be cruel, he looks like any other anonymous back-bencher in a grey suit. In my view, all MPs should be remarkable people - there are plenty of them out there, fighting local campaigns etc - and too many of them are just bland and pointless. Not saying he is - don't know him from Adam - but for God's sake let's make sure we're selecting people who are a little bit special.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#10)

And let's make sure that whoever is chosen is backed by the whole Party - every last member - regardless of which part of it they come from or are perceived to have come from.

The Tories haven't won a by-election from Labour since 1982 and doing so at this point will be seen as proof by them and the media that the next General Election is an almost certain Tory victory, particularly if things don't go well tomorrow.

It is time for some unity/solidarity/comradeship in the face of the Opposition. Let's show Gwyneth some respect and fight it to win.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#11)

May the best man/woman win. If its to be a local person then I hope they are excellent communicators. The eyes of the media will be firmly focussed on Crewe and Nantwich.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#12)

Personally, I hope it's Tamsin Dunwoody.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#13)

Shouldn't this post be headed "Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No Shame"?

Gwynneth Dunwoody is not even in the ground and the Party bigwigs are already plotting to try to manufacture some short term relief for Gordon Brown.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves! Moral compasses?

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#14)

Look dipstick, I'm fed up with Tories coming out with this rubbish, spitting with false rage.

As "Caminoed" said a few comments ago:

From the guardian website:  "The decision to call the by-election now is in accordance with the family's wishes to see, as soon as possible, a new member of parliament elected to stand up for the people of Crewe and Nantwich."

The Dunwoody family said: "We fully support the decision to begin the process of electing a new MP for Crewe and Nantwich. Our mother proudly represented this constituency for 34 years and would not want to see local people go without an MP."

According to Michael Crick on last night's Newsnight, the Lib Dems are already bussing in workers and have changed their candidate.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#15)

As a Labour member, I feel pretty disheartened by even the joking remarks of giving us 'two days off', at least leave it until after election day in future.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#17)

It's the crucial selection tonight so does anybody know who is on the short list ?
After yesterday's local election results in Crewe & N this looks like a lost cause, and the wrong candidate will only compound the problem.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#18)

If Labour loses...christ. Prepare for Tory government.

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#19)

Where is the grapevine on this one?

Re: Crewe and Nantwich By-election - No AWS (#20)

Just heard that Tamsin Dunwoody has been selected. What a disaster! Shame on the party for indulging in this sort of stunt. The people of Crewe & Nantiwich will see this as a cynical manipulation.
